What is Preamp for a Turntable?

A preamp for a turntable, also known as a phono preamplifier or phono stage, is an essential audio component that amplifies the very low signal from a turntable to a level that allows it to be connected to a sound system or speakers.

This amplification is necessary because the signal produced by the cartridge on a turntable is significantly lower (around 1,000 times lower) than the signal from other audio sources like CD players.

Without a phono preamp, the music from a vinyl record would play very quietly when connected directly to most modern audio equipment.

Why is preamp important for a turntable

  • Signal Amplification: The primary function of a phono preamp is to boost the low-level signal from the turntable to a level suitable for further amplification by your stereo system or powered speakers.
  • RIAA Equalization: Besides amplification, phono preamps apply the RIAA equalization curve to the signal. This corrects the frequency response that was altered when the record was cut, ensuring the playback sound matches the original recording

What are different types of Preamps?

Preamps for a turntable are of two types:

  1. Internal Preamps
  2. External Preamps
